Lecture de Judy Hoffman à l’University of Chicago Center in Paris
par Judy Hoffman, professeur à l’Université de Chicago
La présentation sera suivie d’une projection d’un documentaire inachevé de Jean Rouch sur le groupe de jazz Remington au Wise Fools Pub de Chicago.
« During the 1973 International Visual Anthropology Conference which took place in Chicago, Judy Hoffman, who was at the time student at the University of Illinois, met Jean Rouch. She assisted him during the conference as well as the IXth International Congress on Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences and made him discover the city of Chicago. During one to their outings, Judy brought Jean Rouch to a Jazz club, the Wise Fool’s Pub. Jean Rouch fell in love with the place and decided to make a documentary about the pub, its tribe of regulars and the Dave Remington Big Band. In her talk on Jean Rouch, Judy Hoffman will reminisce about Jean Rouch’s participation in the anthropological conference and congress, his passion for Jazz and improvisation, and his desire to make a documentary on the Wise Fool’s Pub, a project which was never completed. She will also present how cinéma vérité and the idea of shared anthropology deeply influenced her work and that of the members of the Kartemquin Films in Chicago. »
